Shirley Ann Vance
October 12, 1934 - July 21, 2024
Shirley Ann Vance, 89 of Elkton, MD, passed away peacefully on July 21, 2024. She was born in Perryville, MD on October 12, 1934. She was the daughter of the late Paul and Mildred (Walker) Culbertson.
After graduating from Perryville High School in 1952, Shirley went to work at Bainbridge Naval Station in Port Deposit. She then went on to work at Aberdeen Proving Ground as a secretary working with the Army classified documents. After 19 years at APG, she retired early due to loss of her eyesight. While very difficult for her, this did not stop her from doing volunteer work. She volunteered for many years at Perry Point Veteran's Administration Hospital where she worked with the chaplains, transporting veterans to and from chapel services. When she moved to Elkton, she volunteered for many years at Laurelwood Nursing Home in the activities department. Shirley was a member of Al-Anon and facilitated the family meetings at Father Martin's Ashley House. She was a member of Post 135 American Legion Auxiliary for 60 years. Shirley was very charitable and gladly contributed to many of her favorite charities.
Shirley loved sending cards to her family and friends. Her favorite thing was to spend time with her daughters, and they made so many great memories together. She really enjoyed traveling to Tennessee to spend time with family who she loved.
Shirley is survived by her daughters Melanie Wells (Mark) of Rising Sun, MD and Romaine Bachman (Steve) of Parkville, MD; beloved sister-in-law Mary Clay of Johnson City, TN; and several nieces and nephews who she adored. She is preceded in death by her husband, Harry Vance; twin daughters, Yvonne and Marie Vance; as well as several brother-in-laws and sister-in-laws.
A memorial service will be held later this year in Johnson City, TN.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to Post 135 American Legion Auxiliary.
