Frances (Fran) Bartlett Barhydt

July 10, 1939 - May 22, 2023

Frances (Fran) Bartlett Barhydt passed away peacefully on May 22, 2023. Her children, Susan Barhydt Hollenbeck and Matthew Barhydt were by her side.

Fran was born in Wilmington, DE on July 10, 1939 to James and Frances Bartlett. She graduated from William Penn High School in Wilmington in 1958. She went on to receive a Bachelor of Science in Education from the University of Delaware in 1962, and a Master of Arts in Education from Central Michigan University in 1967. Fran taught elementary science education in Delaware, Illinois and Michigan. She also taught Science Education at the University of Delaware and later was an Adjunct Professor of Science Education at Lyndon State College in Lyndonville, VT. During the course of her teaching career, she received numerous awards including recognition from the National Science Teaching Association for Excellence in Science Education; the Order of the First State (presented by then-governor Pierre S. DuPont in 1984); the National Education Association/Kodak Cameras in the Curriculum; and the University of Delaware Alumni Association’s Outstanding Alumni Award. Fran’s publishing accomplishments included two science education books, filmstrips and articles for professional journals. In 1986, she was engaged by Walt Disney Educational Media to produce the classroom-based film, “Chemistry Matters.” After retiring from teaching and moving with her husband Jim to Vermont, Fran co-founded the Vermont Energy Education Program (VEEP) headquartered in Montpelier, VT. With VEEP, Fran developed curricula and interactive workshops to teach Vermont educators about energy and climate change. In addition to Susan Barhydt Hollenbeck and Matthew Barhydt, Fran is survived by her sons-in-law Kerry Hollenbeck and Javier Arana; her grandchildren, Elizabeth Hollenbeck, Lee Ann Hollenbeck and Kara Hollenbeck; and her cousins including Sharon Pietlock and Nancy Regan. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Delaware Hospice. A Celebration of Life service is planned for Saturday, July 8, 2023 at Newark United Method Church from 1:00 to 4:00 pm.
