Eleanor June Amthor DeWitt

June 2, 1934 – January 2, 2025

Beloved mother, grandmother, sister and friend Eleanor June Amthor DeWitt passed away on Thursday January 2, 2025. She was born on June 2, 1934 in Hoboken NJ to Frank and Eleanor Sophie (Thiemann) Amthor.

Eleanor graduated from Goucher College in Baltimore and worked at Crown Cork and Seal. Elkton became her home when she married and then raised her three children. For thirty years, Eleanor taught at Tome School as a science teacher, where she also taught Latin. Eleanor truly cared about her students and developed life long friendships with many of them. Eleanor was a loving and caring woman. As a grandmother, she spent a great amount of time caring for her grandchildren, putting her teaching skills to good use. She encouraged them to strive to be their best. She made time for her family and offered her support and wisdom to help them accomplish their goals. Family and friend time, especially gathered around a good meal was very meaningful to her. Eleanor also enjoyed doing crossword puzzles and Sudoku in the local paper. She was a whiz at Jeopardy. Eleanor was an amazing cook, a skill she learned from her mother because she was a scientist she wanted to know all parts of the recipe.

She is survived by two children Brian Lee (Susan) DeWitt and Lyn Anne McDermott and her sister Janet Marie Amthor. Her grandchildren David (Anne) and Ani (Chris) DeWitt and Megan (Sebastian) and Alison McDermott; great grandchildren Rosaleigh, Charlotte, Benedict and Genevieve DeWitt. And many extended family members and friends who loved her dearly.

Eleanor was preceeded in death by her son Bruce DeWitt.

The family would like to thank Caraway Manor for the great care they provided to our mother.

Her service will be with her family. A memorial service for her extended family of friends, students and loved ones will be scheduled later.
